Costa Maya After Dean: What it Means for Real Estate Prices

The Costa Maya is a photographer’s dreamscape—no one can take
a bad photo of these picture-perfect waters and swaying palms.

May 2008
¡¡Viva Mexico!!

Hola Mexico Insider Reader:

Until last August the Costa Maya, the southern stretch of the Yucatán Peninsula’s Caribbean coast, was one of the best bargains in Mexico beachfront and a big personal favorite here at Mexico Insider. Then came Hurricane Dean, the Category 5 storm that steamrollered this coast—and everything on it, including homes and roads—on its way across the Peninsula.

Today the famous Caribbean waters are as turquoise-blue as ever, the beaches still fine, white sand. The little town of Mahahual, largely leveled by Dean, is being rebuilt better (and safer) than ever. But, with memories of Dean so recent, is anyone buying here anymore? And are those who bought earlier still staying?

Mexico Insider sent Suzan Haskins to find out. She visited Mahahual to check its pulse (and its renovation). She spoke with local realtors. And in our lead story she tells us why the Costa Maya still makes sense as an investment—and gives some tips on ways to profit from property there.

One of the challenges of the Costa Maya is its lack of infrastructure. But local expats haven’t let that slow them down—they’ve helped make the area a leader in alternative, off-the-grid living. Dan Prescher tells us how several Costa Maya residents are successfully using alternative energy sources—and includes a resource list for those of you interested in doing the same.

And though it’s only May, November—and the U.S. elections—will be here before you know it. This year’s Presidential election is shaping up to be a key one—the Woodstock of elections, the one years later that everyone wishes they’d been at. Make sure you’re there if you’re a U.S. citizen—we tell you how to register and vote abroad in this month’s issue. One tip: it takes time to register, so start early.

¡Felices Viajes a todos!

P.S. Just up the road from the Costa Maya is Cancún, where we’ll be holding International Living’s third annual Ultimate Event May 28-31. There’s still time to sign up. This is our biggest, most comprehensive event of the year, covering everything from how to buy a property overseas to ways to make a living once you’re there. I’ll be in Cancún, talking about Mexico, of course. I hope to see some of you there. Find out more.
