Yucatán Gulf Coast: One of the Last Great Beachfront Bargains Yucatán Gulf coast beaches, like this one at Chelem, are pleasant, low-key, and affordable
November 2009 ¡¡Viva Mexico!! Hola Mexico Insider Reader: Imagine living in a beach house, the ocean at your doorstep, in a tranquil, laid-back little fishing port where you can buy the morning’s catch right at the dock. Imagine that you also live as little as half an hour from a major metropolis that offers every big-city amenity, from gourmet shopping to an international airport. Now imagine that you paid less than $100,000 for that beach house… Sound too good to be true? In most places in Mexico it would be. Bargain-priced beach property is getting harder and harder to find. That’s why the Yucatán Gulf coast is so special. Here you can find small beach houses for under $100,000—or buy a beachfront lot for pennies on the dollar and build your own dream house. This stretch of coast, just north of Mérida and running east along the top of the Yucatán Peninsula, remains one of the best bargains in Mexico for beachfront and beach view property. This month we explore this bargain-priced stretch of coast, from Churburná and Chelem, at its western end, all the way to Chabihau and Dzilam de Bravo in the east. Looking for an established beach town near transportation and amenities? We tell you which towns may best suit you. Prefer someplace off the beaten track, where you can get the biggest beachfront bang for your buck? We make some suggestions for that, too. So sit back, enjoy…and take notes. With snowbird season around the corner, you may just want to visit the Yucatán Gulf coast and try it out for yourself. ¡Felices viajes a todos!
